Patience and a calm demeanor are essential, especially when working with children with special needs, though this is not a requirement. Ultimately, the ability to understand and connect with the child is highly valued.
About the Children:
The eldest child has high functioning autism, which can present social challenges, along with anxiety and communication difficulties. Despite these, he enjoys activities such as going to the gym, listening to music, recess, and math. He faces some challenges with reading and writing. His after-school activities include karate and occupational therapy. His other interests include building, movement, and spending time outdoors with trucks. He is caring, persistent, affectionate, energetic, and highly intelligent.
He is creative and curious, often asking why things work the way they do. He has a big heart, shows strong affection, and enjoys meeting new people and adults. He is high-functioning but does not always understand sarcasm; when that occurs, he is redirected through counting or other clear instructions. He is a fan of Power Rangers.
Both boys have allergies; their diet excludes dairy, soy, wheat, and corn, as these are avoided in the home. The boys have a close relationship, with the youngest sometimes protective of his older brother. The youngest has not yet spoken his first words.
The youngest child is receiving early intervention for reading and speech therapy. His activities include gymnastics. He is playful, loving, adventurous, and enjoys exploring cause-and-effect relationships and listening to music.
